XXXLutz marketplace: how to sell on the furniture platform
The XXXLutz marketplace is the sales platform of the Austrian furniture chain, where third-party sellers list their products alongside XXXLutz’s own range. For furniture, décor and lighting businesses, it is a real opportunity to enter the German and Austrian markets without building their own brand from scratch. Below, we break this marketplace down in detail: who XXXLutz is, what it costs, how registration works and who it actually makes sense for.

What is XXXLutz, and how does it differ from an ordinary furniture shop?
XXXLutz is an Austrian furniture retail chain and one of the largest in its industry worldwide. The company runs more than 400 bricks-and-mortar stores in 13 European countries: Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Switzerland, Romania, Sweden, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Serbia. It serves more than 20 million regular customers. What sets XXXLutz apart from a typical furniture shop is its scale and strategy: for decades, the company has grown through acquisitions and expansion, building up several brands at once under the roof of the XXXLutz group, including Mömax and Möbelix. The marketplace is a natural extension of this model: instead of selling only its own range, XXXLutz has opened its online platform to offers from third-party businesses, while keeping its own brand as the ‘shop window’ for the entire transaction.
What is the XXXLutz marketplace and how does it work for third-party sellers?
The XXXLutz marketplace runs on Mirakl, the same technology behind many European marketplace platforms. In practice, this means the customer buys the product on the XXXLutz website, but a third-party seller fulfils the order: they pack it, ship it and handle any complaints. For sellers, the model is very similar to what we know from Amazon or Allegro: the platform provides the traffic and brand trust, while you are responsible for the product, price and logistics (you can outsource the running of your listings to an agency as part of XXXLutz account management). The difference is that XXXLutz isn’t open to everyone. You have to apply and get through a selection process, which we cover in the next section.
What are the requirements to start selling on XXXLutz?
To become a sales partner of XXXLutz, you need to meet several strict formal and quality requirements. Access to the platform is limited: unlike on many other marketplaces, this isn’t an ‘instant’ sign-up but a process in which XXXLutz has to approve you.
Documents and registrations
The basic requirements are a German VAT number or registration for the EU’s OSS (One Stop Shop) scheme, plus a warehouse located within the European Union. Every product must have its own unique 13-digit EAN code, as this is the main identifier of a listing on the platform. Without these three elements, your application won’t even be considered for approval.
Quality requirements for listings
XXXLutz keeps a close eye on the quality of product content. The description in German must be between 300 and 2,000 characters long, with no delivery or brand information in the text itself. The main image needs a white or transparent background, at least 1,000 × 1,000 pixels, a resolution of 300 dpi and the product centred in the frame. The product name can be no longer than 150 characters, and the first word is written in capital letters.
How much does it cost to sell on the XXXLutz marketplace?
Selling on XXXLutz doesn’t involve a fee just for joining the platform. The real costs only start once you sell your first product: that is when a monthly subscription of €49.99 is charged. On top of this comes a commission on every transaction, ranging from 7 to 16 per cent depending on the product category. This model suits businesses that are only testing the platform: you don’t pay an ‘entry ticket’, and your costs start alongside your first revenue. It is worth building the commission into your margin calculations straight away, though, because the gap between 7 and 16 per cent can genuinely change how profitable a given product category is.
Type of fee | Amount | When it is charged |
|---|---|---|
Registration (setup) fee | €0 | Not applicable |
Monthly subscription | €49.99 | From the first unit sold |
Sales commission | 7-16% | On every transaction, depending on the category |
How does seller registration on XXXLutz work, step by step?
Registering on XXXLutz isn’t a matter of filling in a form and automatically starting to sell the next day. It is a selective, multi-stage process in which the platform itself decides who joins its circle of partners.
- Application via the contact form. Access to the XXXLutz marketplace is restricted, so the first step is to send an enquiry directly to the platform rather than registering an account yourself.
- Review of your application. XXXLutz checks whether your range fits the platform’s profile (furniture, interiors, décor, lighting) and whether you meet the formal requirements.
- Account and billing set-up. Once you are accepted, you fill in your company details, VAT number and payment information.
- Product catalogue integration. You can upload your offer manually, via a CSV file or through the API, often using a connector such as Mirakl Connect.
- Completing your listings in line with the requirements. Photos, German descriptions, EAN codes and categories must meet the platform’s standards.
- Going live. The first subscription fee only appears after your first unit is sold.
Who does the XXXLutz marketplace make sense for, and who doesn’t it suit?
The XXXLutz marketplace makes sense for businesses in specific sectors: furniture, interior accessories, lighting, home textiles, kitchen accessories, décor and seasonal products for the home and garden. It is a specialist platform rather than a generalist one, so if your range fits these categories, you gain access to a base of more than 20 million customers who already come there with a clear intention: to buy something for their home. It makes no sense, however, for sellers of electronics, clothing, automotive products or food: these categories simply don’t fit the platform’s profile, and your offer will be rejected at the review stage. It’s a bit like trying to run a tyre stall at an antiques fair: someone might buy something, but it’s definitely not the right crowd.
Is it worth selling on XXXLutz instead of (or alongside) Amazon or Otto?
XXXLutz is best treated as a complement to your sales strategy rather than its foundation. From our experience of onboarding clients onto niche platforms in Germany and Austria, such as Kaufland or Otto, a recurring pattern emerges: businesses that move onto these channels already have their Amazon sales under control and are looking to diversify, not to take their first step into cross-border e-commerce. XXXLutz works in a similar way: it is a channel that genuinely makes sense in a specific niche (home and interiors), but it won’t replace Amazon’s reach or the breadth of Otto’s categories. If you are only just starting to sell in Germany, it’s worth building experience on a larger platform first and then adding XXXLutz as a further, more specialised revenue channel.
Summary
XXXLutz shows something that has held true across marketplaces for years: the more specialised the platform, the smaller its reach, but also the less competition and the better-matched the customer. It isn’t a channel for everyone, but for a furniture or interiors business that has already mastered the basics of selling abroad, it could be exactly the missing piece in diversifying its revenue. The key is to go in with a properly worked-out budget for commission and a realistic approach to the selection process, because this is a platform that chooses its partners, not the other way round.
